EC should take extra steps to instill confidence among voters

Elections in Goa have been completed but not without hiccups and glitches. The two incidents - VVPAT system at Canacona and the EVM machine at Reis Magos, besides the quality of the ink at some booths are indeed unfortunate.

In view of the several doubts expressed in certain quarters about the EVMs, the authorities should have taken extra care to restore the faith and confidence of the electorate in the electronic voting system.

If the VVPAT system and the EVMs had been checked before the start of the elections, then what went wrong at the time of voting? They need to probe such issues and ensure that the rest of the polling process is completed without any more such issues.

The confidence exuded by the various candidates (with the exception of independent candidates) and political parties of winning the elections by a huge margin is something to be noted. Supporters of a particular party reportedly burst crackers in Mapusa in anticipation of a victory.
