Farmers need support during kharif season

Monsoon is the kharif season in Goa. If one goes to villages and rural areas you will see the lush green fields, especially in July.

Farmers will be standing in the water, in crouched positions, and transplanting paddy seedlings.

It takes anything between 90 and 110 days for these seeds to grow into plants and finally the farmers to get the harvest that they sell.

However, of late due to erratic weather conditions and other natural calamities, several farmers have suffered huge losses.

Around 28 varieties of rice are grown in Goa in three areas -- the uplands or morod, Midlands or kherlands and saline lands or khazan.

Rice is the staple food for most Goans and much depends on the weather for a bountiful harvest. It would be in the fitness of things if the government comes out with a compensation package for farmers in the event their crop is destroyed.
