Dr Brian Weiss, a psychiatrist from the US, stumbled upon‘past lives’ in the 1980s when, after using every conceivable method intraditional psychiatry to relieve his patient Catherine from her phobias andrecurring nightmares, he tried hypnosis. Through hypnosis, Catherine couldremember the various lives she had lived on earth. She found that the traumasin these lives were the cause of her ailments in the current life. Throughacknowledging these past life ailments and traumas, Catherine’s currentsymptoms disappeared. The initial scepticism of the doctor vanished whenCatherine conveyed messages from advanced, wise souls she called Masters “ themessages served as a closure for the death of his infant son “ and hedocumented this first case extensively in his first book Many Lives ManyMasters. Several other books followed, each containing case studies of patientswho were regressed and the therapeutic benefits of remembering past lifetraumas. The books, though contradictory to our linear belief “ we are born, wedie and we go to heaven or hell “ make the reader pause and begin to questionthe very same belief.
In his new book Miracles Happen, co-authored by his daughterAmy Weiss, Dr Weiss has once again attempted to convey that the soul is eternaland death is but of the physical body that the soul inhabits. Through thestories, the doctor says that the soul will keep reincarnating in order tolearn the necessary lessons of love and compassion and will attain moksha untilthese are learnt. He also says that the manner a current life is lived willdetermine the next incarnation. The book contains numerous personal accounts ofpeople who have experienced past life regression therapy, who recognise soulmates from a former life, who have found solace to grief and also those whosephysical symptoms and illnesses vanished or lessened. People in some of thecases have gone on to validate their memories and found information regardingtheir past existence.
Call it new age stuff, and while some scientists and doctorshave few kind words for this, you will find yourself asking, what must have Ibeen in a former life?
