The pharmaceutical industry is booming with the price of drugs touching a new high hence the generic medicines are an alternative and affordable medicine for a rural poor population who cannot afford to buy expensive allopathic medicines. Generic medicines with the same composition as allopathic medicines costs less and is a blessing in disguise for the underprivileged. The generic medicines may not be a hit with upper class society because the misconception created by allopathic medicine fraternity that generic medicines are not as effective as allopathic medicines. This misconception should be removed by the Goa government by telling the doctors in GMC to prescribe generic medicine in the OPD and also in the hospital so that the people consume the medicines without any doubts. I was told by a generic medicine pharmacy owner that normal allopathic medicine of cancer costs around Rs 2 and half lakh but the same generic medicine costs around Rs 10,000 to 20,000. Hence the government should ensure that generic medicines are available in government hospitals and pharmacies first and then make it mandatory for private pharmacies to store allopathic and generic medicines.
