The Sao Matias Village Panchayat has reportedly passed a resolution (despite witnessing heated discussion and objections from some vigilant 'niz-Goenkars' from the same village) to install a statue of Chatrapati Shivaji in front of the panchayat building at Diwar. Well, some pro-Maharashtrawadi elements, ignoring the sacrifices of all our own great past Goan leaders (including freedom-fighters) have made it a fashion of late to glorify only Shivaji.
Why can't these individuals glorify the real Goan freedom fighters who died fighting against the Portuguese rulers after a long battle and who were finally instrumental in successfully liberating Goa? Why are they not installing statues of our Father of the Opinion Poll, Dr Jack Sequeira in all villages for aggressively fighting against the merger of our State with Maharashtra along with the other Goan leaders and for successfully safeguarding our unique separate identity for good in Goa? I think that we should learn to respect our own great Goan freedom fighters/leaders after thoroughly learning about their lives by reading some genuine history books of Goa.
