The Director General of Police (DGP) has stated that the Goa police has plans to reduce fatal accidents by 5% by the end of this year and 10% by the next year end. Considering the annually occurring 270-odd fatal accidents, the 5% drop works out to a miserly 14 less fatal accidents. The tourist season would soon commence and the cops have to gird their loins and tackle the menace of drunk and rash driving; especially in December when there are festivals, New Year eve parties and celebrations. The cops must arrest and imprison the offenders for 2-3 days, charge double and compounded penalties for each violation, spot suspension / cancellation of licence, if rent-a-car or bikes are involved then imprison and penalise the owners too, brook no argument or crumble under political or other kind of pressures. Would some of these measures be implemented without any hesitation? Luckily in Goa, the public do not take law into their hands and rough up the offenders or damage the vehicles that caused the accidents else matters would come to a head. But considering increasing incidents of road rage, that day may not be far off.
