It is learnt that the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has reportedly written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking that the country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna should be given to all doctors, nurses and paramedics who served the people amid the pandemic. It is absolutely true that the doctors, nurses and paramedics have done a tremendous job doing the pandemic and are still continuing to serve the Covid patients. Many doctors have sacrificed their lives fighting the coronavirus. They deserve all the praise showered upon them by the grateful citizens of the country. But one wonders if seeking the country’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna for the doctors, nurses and the paramedic is viable. It is pertinent to note that numerous soldiers and personnel of the defense forces as well as those guarding our borders with the neighbouring countries, have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. It would be in the fitness of things for the Government at the centre to institute a special award for Covid warriors so that a suitable title can be included before their names in order to thank and honour them.
