The All Goa State U-15 Open Chess Selection Championship 2024 was held at the Government College of Commerce & Economics in Margao on 11th and 14th October. The top four players from both the open and girls’ categories will represent Goa at the Nationals in Chennai in November 2024. These young chess players have demonstrated remarkable skill and dedication, highlighting the emerging talent in Goa.
Chess, often called the “game of kings,” is a strategic board game that requires deep mental focus, critical thinking, and planning. The Telles siblings, Joshua and Evan, have made headlines by winning numerous trophies, including cash prizes, in their age groups and have represented Goa at the Nationals. Credit goes to Prakash Vikram Singh, who runs a chess academy in South Goa. Notably, IM Ethan Vaz has also trained with this chess expert. India recently made history by winning double gold at the 45th FIDE Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2024, with both the men’s and women’s teams taking home gold. This achievement showcases the strength of India’s chess talent and serves as inspiration for young players.
As chess continues to grow in India, Goa needs a fully established Goa Chess Association (GCA) to provide financial support for national-level players. This support would cover travel, accommodation, and expert training, helping develop more champions and encouraging talented players to pursue their dreams. Local businesses could contribute through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, fostering local talent and working towards making Goa the chess capital of the country.
