The Goa government’s decision to order a detailed inquiry into the recent cash-for-job scam linked to the Excise Department, coupled with its assurance that the accused will be arrested and their properties seized, is welcome.
However, the real concern is why Goans continue to fall prey to such fraudulent promises despite repeated warnings and the risks involved.
Not long ago, the state witnessed an uproar over the cash-for-job scam, which resulted in investigations and arrests. One would have expected these developments to serve as a deterrent. Yet, the recurrence of such incidents suggests that the lure of a government job continues to overpower caution and common sense.
Unemployment is undoubtedly one of the major reasons behind this disturbing trend. For many families, securing a government job for their children is a cherished dream.
Unscrupulous individuals exploit these aspirations. What is particularly alarming is that these scams are no longer confined to promises of securing lower-level positions like police constable and peons but now involve high-profile posts, with victims reportedly even being provided appointment letters.
With the Goa Staff Selection Commission now in place, aspiring candidates must familiarize themselves with the official recruitment process and verify every appointment through authorized channels.
