After taking a resounding beating, Goa stands at a crossroads, struggling to reclaim its former glory. Much of its pristine coastline and interior countryside has all but vanished. The Birch fire episode remains fresh in public memory, and such disasters will continue unless drastic changes are made. The State’s infrastructure is woefully substandard and needs a complete overhaul. The Margao market is a case in point: while a refurbished roof has been provided, perhaps prompted by fears of another fire tragedy similar to the Birch inferno, much more remains to be done.
For such a large market, there are only two entry and exit points, and even these lack adequate width. Beaches and marketplaces also require far greater garbage-holding capacity, which can only be achieved through timely evacuation and larger disposal facilities. One-sided development is visible across the length and breadth of the State. Funds are often insufficient to complete projects, and half-finished works cannot be equated with development. What matters is the finished product, from start to finish.
Formalin continues to enter Goa in deceptive ways, seeping into the food chain through rotten and unhealthy fish. Authorities must strictly monitor all entry points and test for traces of this deadly chemical. The same vigilance is needed against the artificial ripening of immature fruits. Such food adulteration contributes to a rise in cancer cases, many of which have limited treatment options. Health-conscious tourists are increasingly wary of these risks and may alter their travel plans ”something that can be prevented through robust, State-wide planning.
Unregulated hill cutting will inevitably lead to soil erosion and deadly floods, compounding disaster risks. Bus stands across the State are in a shabby condition and need extensive refurbishment, larger parking areas, and wider entry and exit points. Buses permanently parked in bays must be moved to allow smooth traffic flow.
Goa can regain its beauty and pristine glory if development is guided by careful planning and overseen by capable, committed leadership.
