On January 16 in New Delhi the Election Commission (EC) showcased a prototype of a remote electronic voting machine (REVM) and asked for written reviews from the recognised 8 national and 57 regional political parties. The REVMs could ensure voting from remote polling stations by migrants as they form a large chunk of the vote bank. The migrant voters need not go back to their place of voting in another State but can exercise their franchise of voting from the place where they presently reside. This is a good initiative by the EC as the migrants need not spend money nor lose wages when they go to vote in their States and the percentage of voter turnout could increase which in the 2019 General Election was 67.4%. Now the EC should find ways to make urban residents go to vote as they are the ones who are indifferent on polling days and treat them as paid holidays. Perhaps the EC could introduce special REVMs so that the apathetic elite people can cast their precious votes from the comfort of their homes.
