The Goa government’s continued promotion of offshore casino ships by issuing new gambling licences is worrying. Even though many Goans have openly opposed it, more licences are being granted, and the number of casino vessels on the Mandovi River keeps rising.
This unchecked growth is polluting the river and putting marine life at risk. It is also changing the character of Panaji. A city once known for its beauty and culture is slowly being seen as a gambling hub. From the airport to the city, visitors are met with casino advertisements. Tourists spend money, but locals see little real benefit.
People living in Panaji already struggle with parking and other civic problems. At the same time, there are concerns that those in power receive free stays and facilities from casinos. This raises serious questions about priorities.
Ministers had promised to move the casinos off the river within 100 days, but that promise has not been kept.
The government must now listen to the people of Goa and act quickly to protect the river, the city and the community from the growing spread of casinos.
