On Wednesday, citizens of Vasco and the entire state woke up with shock and disbelief to the news of the death of ex- MLA of Vasco Simon D’Souza. The news of the tragic death went viral on the social-media. Simon had the love of the people at heart. He served the citizens of Vasco till his last breath. Though he won the assembly elections from two different constituencies, Dabolim and Vasco, Simon was more of a social worker than a politician. Hence he continued serving the people for several years even after being out of power. Very approachable and kind-hearted, Simon belonged to a different era of politicians for whom service always came before self. Having known and closely associated with the man for over 40 years, I have had the good fortune in knowing Simon as a person who would go to any length to help people in distress. His door was always open for the needy as his shop selling consumer durables was virtually crowded with people who needed some help or other in the government offices. He took interest and was a livewire at the St. Andrew’s church parish and was the founder member of several social organizations. Vascoites will forever miss the smiling, gentle and adorable human being that Simon was.
ADELMO FERNANDES, Vasco
