Parties force their choice without taking voters into confidence. Their main concern is winnability at all costs with muscle and money power. No decent, educated individual with required credentials aspires to throw in his hat. Simply because he does not have the resources to splurge.
What type of enlightened participation, debates can be expected from such tinpots to scrutinise, suggest or bring forth legislation. To legislate is the core role of an MLA , instead lot of mileage is attached to question hour and theatrics and scenes to record their presence and worth. The quality of debates has come down to dismal levels of intellectual discourse. Recording attendance for perks is the best service. Why do Departments of PWD, Water and Electricity exist. Are road work, electricity repairs, water works part of MLAs service to gloat about? How many of them have identified with public issues of linear projects, coal pollution, doubling of rail tracks, rising prices, unemployment, atrocities against minorities and women, destruction of environment? Or how many sitting MLAs have given an account of public sentiments and contentious bills?
