A New Year and a new beginning

Today is the first day of a brand New Year 2023. As the New Year begins, we feel that we need to make changes in our life, start on a new path, do new things, and say goodbye to old habits, problems and difficulties. Often, we start making new plans and new resolutions.  It is said that “year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.” New beginning means that one is allowing oneself to accept changes that might bring good things.

New beginnings means that one is capable of knowing where one lacked in the past and using those examples of failures to create a success ladder for the future. It's a precise moment for leaving some things in the past while embracing change and challenges. New Year's Eve also gives us the chance to reflect on the previous year, because most of us are different people than we were 365 days ago. Incidentally the Line Islands and Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean, are the first places to welcome the New Year, while American Samoa, Baker Island and Howland Island are among the last.  The most common New Year resolutions include - to exercise more, lose weight, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, live life to the fullest, save more money, quit smoking and spend more time with family and friends. Other resolutions could include to organize one's life, meditate and improve the sleep schedule, limit one's time on Social Media, pick up a new hobby or activity, cook something new once a week and to create a work out plan. Most people blame their failure to fulfill resolutions on a lack of time, resources, or motivation, or a loss of zeal after starting.

Only about 16 per cent of people are able to follow their resolutions. According to research of those who make a New Year's resolution, after 1 week 75% are still successful in keeping it. After two weeks, the number drops to 71%. After 1 month, the number drops again to 64%. And after 6 months, 46% of people who make a resolution are still successful in keeping it. Some of the reasons for not being able to keep the New Year resolutions include treating a marathon like a sprint, putting the cart before the horse and a lack in self-belief. One must realize that breaking and forming new habits is not a one-day errand.
