The Indian ambassador to Ireland has come in for local and international opprobrium after he wrote a letter to a prominent local newspaper 'The Irish Times' eulogising PM Modi and criticizing the Congress era as a corruption centric rule by a single dynastic party. The embassy of India used it's official Twitter ( now X) handle to post the letter on social media. The envoy's letter was a petulant rejoinder to the paper's editorial which flagged the arrest of the Delhi CM, crackdown on freedom of speech, politically targeted corruption cases, sliding democratic credentials and the dominance of intolerant right wing Hindu majoritarianism in India. A career diplomat issuing such letters in defence of the leader of a political party is unprofessional and disgraceful but is to be expected in a Modi-ruled India. An ambassador represents the nation, not a political party and certainly not the autocratic leader of a bigoted outfit whose avowed aim is to achieve an opposition mukt Bharat while hypocritically anointing itself as the mother of democracy. More than high time the country votes for a change of guard.
