Avoidable deaths of power-line workers

In a tragic incident, an electricity line helper reportedly died of electrocution while on duty at Colvale industrial estate on Wednesday. It is learnt that the line-helper was engaged in repair work on an electricity pole carrying high tension power lines when he got electrocuted. There have been several incidents in the past when power-line workers of the electricity department have died due to electrocution, especially during the rains.

These deaths, which bring untold miseries to the family of the individuals, are avoidable with a little bit of precaution. It is prudent to switch off the main switch which supplies electric current to the power-line connected to the pole where the repair work is to be carried out. This is a basic necessity.

It may also be necessary to put up a warning sign at the switch-board so that the power line is not switched on even by mistake by the other electricity department workers. When there is so much power outage, putting off the power supply for a little while will have no effect on the consumer.
