Balancing safety & digital growth for children in Goa

While the Australian Senate’s move to ban children under 16 from accessing social media platforms is indeed a bold step aimed at protecting young minds from online harms, implementing a similar law in Goa could be quite challenging due to the pervasive nature of the internet and the difficulty in monitoring and enforcing such regulations.

Children may find ways to bypass restrictions using VPNs or other digital tools. With today’s kids being quite internet-savvy, placing a blanket ban could hinder their access to valuable resources and stifle digital growth. Hence, parental controls and awareness campaigns need to be inculcated in young minds about the safe practices and pitfalls of online access.

While the internet is an invaluable resource for both educational content and extracurricular activities, a blended learning approach is required where physical and digital learning coexist and complement each other. Given these benefits, rather than restricting internet access, guiding children on safe and productive usage could be a more sustainable and inclusive solution. While it’s tempting to adopt a model that worked elsewhere, it’s crucial to adapt and test it to fit local needs. Goa, with its distinct educational and social landscape, would benefit more from a tailored approach that suits its specific dynamics.
