The Goa governments nod to open a restaurant in the precincts of the Aguada jail is not welcome move for the freedom fighters and also public as they say the sanctity of the site is at stake. There were many freedom fighters who shed their blood and were imprisoned in the Aguada jail. The Tourism Minister says that they have not allowed anything that will disturb the sanctity of the museum and jail areas.
It clearly shows that the government is promoting liquor in sacred places and is of the opinion that without liquor tourism cannot succeed. There so many whole sale liquor outlets and bars in the close vicinity of the Aguada jail is more than enough. Hence the freedom fighters are absolutely right in opposing tooth and nail the bar outlet in the courtyard. We see politicians and even member of Panchayat bodies and municipality members minting money and the opening of the bar inthe courtyard may be the proposal of the liquor companies for mere advertisement of their products will give revenue for the government as well the liquor companies will amass wealth at the expense of a sacred place for the freedom fighters.
