Collapsing compound walls can prove dangerous

Due to heavy rains a laterite stone built compound wall of a school at Dattawadi in Mapusa reportedly collapsed on Thursday evening. Luckily no one was injured in the incident. It is learnt that the portion of the same wall collapsed last year wherein a person was injured. However, it has been almost one year and no repair work has been undertaken.

There have been several instances of compound walls collapsing due to incessant rains that have been reported in the State. It must be said that collapse of compound walls can prove dangerous for those walking along the way. If the wall falls on a passerby it can injure the person and the injuries can even prove fatal. Many of the compound walls of homes are located along the pavement where pedestrians walk on.

It is pertinent to note that the authorities make a survey of weak buildings and those houses located on the hillside which are susceptible to landslides. The concerned authorities then send notices to the occupants to carry out necessary repairs of the buildings or to vacate their homes to avoid a disaster due to landslides.
