The ongoing membership drive being conducted by the Congress party in the State seems to be done just to please the High Command.
Congress leaders are out to demonstrate their clout and popularity just ahead of the ensuing Assembly elections with an eye on tickets.
If one observes minutely, there are no fees being collected from those joining the party. Also, no questions are asked if the person is already a member of any other party.
Instead of undertaking such membership drives, the Congress High Command must introspect and find out why elected members of the party desert the Congress and join other parties.
Also, the High Command must put in place a ‘fool proof’ system where those who had resigned and joined other parties or defected to other parties will be banned and not taken back.
Several leaders have time and again defected from the Congress only to be forgiven and taken back at just before the elections due to the winnability factor.
It’s time the High Command cracks the whip to bring some semblance of credibility into the grand old party.
