The political upheaval that has taken place in Goa during the past few days with the defection of 8 Congress MLAs to the BJP, is not something new or surprising . It has been happening over the past 30 years or more, during which time Goa earned the dubious distinction of being the only state with the maximum number of defections. Past records have also shown that Goa has had 13 chief ministers during a short span of 10 years, with 2 chief ministers being forced to quit, after being in office for 8 to 17 days. It is pertinent to mention that around 15-20 years back, the BJP in Goa was branded as a communal party, known for dividing the people on religious lines, and which people would not even touch with a barge pole. I wonder what has brought about this drastic transformation today from communal to secular, and embraced even by the minority community. Even if MLAs are being bought for Rs40 crore and more, as per the allegations made by the Congress party, do these turncoat MLAs not have an ideology or responsibility to the people who have voted them to power? Probably its a loss of their moral compass that has brought the party to this pitiable state.
