Covid: Govt’s negligent attitude to the fore

With India swamped by a massive wave of Covid-19 infections and deaths, the main cause of this tragic situation is the complacency of the government and the lack of a conscientious public.

The country has exported million Covid vaccines to most of the countries when it had a vaccine shortage. India is currently witnessing a harrowing second wave of the pandemic, bringing the country’s health care system to its knees and threatening the lives of innumerable people.

Instead of debunking myths and establishing stronger protocols, the government has acted like the pandemic was over and eased restrictions.

The government’s lack of planning for the second wave along with their inaction during superspreader events like election rallies and religious gatherings have put the Indian people in a compromising position.

The constant negligence has resulted in the chilling situation that currently plagues the country, and its previous complacency continues in the form of misplaced priorities and inefficiency. People working from home are mentally fatigued which is a bigger cost to pay.

India's healthcare infrastructure has crumbled under the weight of thousands of cases. The tragedy is that the central government, which has centralised all powers under the Disaster Management Act, refused to prepare itself or the states for this second wave, believing that the pandemic is over.

The BJP government believes in centralising all political power in its hands and letting the “free market” led by big monopoly houses solve the problems of the country. And if such a policy fails, blame the state governments, the anti-national forces and finally, the Opposition.
