It is both shocking and outrageous that 179 illegal structures have sprung up in the 'No Development Zone' (NDZ) of the popular tourist coastal belt of Arambol beach , under the very noses of the village panchayat of Arambol.
That the High Court of Bombay in Goa had to intervene and direct the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and the Goa State Pollution Control Board to conduct a joint inspection with the Panchayat authorities, to verify the alleged illegalities, speaks volumes of the failure of the Panchayat authorities to take action, even to the extent of overlooking the illegally constructed 3-4 storeyed structures.
All this goes to show how in Goa, building and construction rules can easily be tweaked and compromised to suit the machinations of vested interests and the greed of the local authoriities.
It is also unfortunate that the High court in Goa has to come to the rescue time and again, whenever the Goa government fails to take corrective action.
