It may be recalled that Danielle McLaughlin (28) a tourist from Ireland was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered at Canacona in March 2017. When a British teenager Scarlett Keeling was raped and murdered on a beach in Goa in 2008 it shook the conscience of people of the state. However now murders of tourists have become such a common occurrence that it hardly draws the attention of the general public. The death of two tourists on New Year's Day is definitely the worst publicity for the state. In several cases what were initially considered as “natural” deaths later turned out to be premeditated murders. The mother of all crimes is a mother killing her own four-year-old son. The sun, sand and rocking nightlife of the famed beaches of Goa hide a dark underbelly. The iconic holiday destination has reportedly claimed the lives of roughly 20 foreigners every year in the last decade or so. What should worry the state that receives more than 5 lakh tourists every year is that more and more foreigners are raising their voice over safety and security issues.
