It is not known why the government is dragging its feet on acting against the illegal structure constructed within the global heritage and protected monuments precincts of St Cajetan church, in Old Goa.
By all reckoning the structure is proved to be illegal and needs to be demolished without further ado. It makes little sense for the government to sift through documents of the Town and Planning Department (TCP) trying to find out when and who was responsible for granting approval and permission for the construction of the controversial structure.
A tactical move to buy time, for sure. The fact that the structure is illegal makes it a fit case for demolition. Only recently, a Catholic church in South Delhi was razed to the ground by the Delhi development Authorities (DDA) on grounds that the church was constructed on illegal land, even though the church was operational since the past 14 years. The notice was pasted on the church compound wall, and in 3 days the church was demolished without giving any chance for the church to respond.
I wonder what prevents the government from acting likewise, even after it has all the ammunition in its favour.
