This is with reference to the report, "Buying goods in plastic? Be ready to pay a deposit - The Goan Everyday August 1, 2023." There is no doubt that dealing with plastic waste has become a huge, mammoth task before the authorities. The government seems to be desperate. The new report rightly points out, the ban on plastic has had no effect on controlling the menace of single use plastic. And yes, as the Environment minister says, part of the problem lies with the public. I have been witnessing this in Mumbai. Seemingly educated people do not blink an eyelid while accepting goods from the vendor in a single use plastic bag, at times even demanding a plastic bag from the vendor. I leave no opportunity however, to reprimand both the vendor and the customer while I am at the vendor's stall. The Goa government introducing a 'Deposit Refundable Scheme' could probably help. People do not seem to, rather do not want to heed pleas to reduce the use of plastic, especially single use plastic.
