The traditional and well-known Zatra of Goa is set to be celebrated on 21 April 2026. A unique feature of this Zatra is that devotees, known as ‘Dhonds’, walk barefoot on fire after observing a fast and remaining strictly vegetarian for several days.
This year, the authorities and the temple committee have taken several steps to ensure a smooth celebration without any untoward incidents. Last year, lives were lost due to a stampede, which was a shocking incident.
To improve safety, stalls have been moved away from the main road leading from the lake to the homkund, where the fire logs are placed. The Dhonds take a ritual bath and then run towards the homkund to walk barefoot on the fire. The roads have been kept clear on both sides to prevent overcrowding.
Stalls are set up away from the main road towards the temple, and vehicle parking has been arranged in the open space behind the temple. A strong security system has been put in place, including 92 CCTV cameras, along with volunteers and police personnel to manage the crowd.
The committee has taken all necessary precautions to make this year’s Zatra a success. Devotees have been requested to avoid overcrowding on the day of the homkund, as a large number of Dhonds will be participating in the fire-walking ritual. With these arrangements, the Zatra is expected to be celebrated in a grand and orderly manner.
