It is understood that recently a major Bollywood production house camping in Nerul for a shoot left in its wake unsegregated garbage and mounds of filth at the shooting site.
The spot is in the middle of a residential site at Nerul, at the base of a hill of meadows and trees that overlooks the Nerul church. A complaint has reportedly been registered by the locals at the panchayat office and that the ESG office was informed.
The trash was then reportedly burnt in the bins which also melted and large bags of garbage were dumped at other places by the workers of the production unit.
The new dump site is now littered with discarded set material along with PPE gowns and masks. The production units that come to Goa for a shoot should not consider the state as a dumping site for the trash they produce.
The unit should either take along with them the garbage they produce or hand over the segregated garbage to the respective panchayat for proper disposal after paying the necessary fees.
As it is, Goa is grappling with the problem of garbage disposal and would do well without garbage being dumped by these units. Paying a nominal fee to the panchayats does not entitle them to leave unsegregated trash behind.
Panchayats in future need to inform such units to manage their own trash or segregate it for disposal.
