The law and order situation in Goa has gone for a toss for a pretty long time and our Home Minister, under whom the portfolio is, seems to be only basking in glory over his so-called achievements, which except for some road and bridges infrastructure, leave much to be desired, especially as far as governance is concerned.
Reports do not depict a very rosy picture of tourism, with foreign tourists apparently opting for other destinations, due to fleecing by touts, taxis, hotels, etc. Cases of brawls between domestic tourists and shack/restaurant employees are becoming common. Cases of unnatural deaths, suicides and road accidents are on the rise. At this rate, even Indian tourists will not find it safe to visit our State. Recently, there were a few deaths caused by water sports accidents and in a few cases, the operators did not have the necessary permissions.
In most cases referred above, these sad happenings could have been avoided, had the enforcement authorities been more on the guard. But, it never happens, because they are generally in deep slumber and possibly in receipt of haftas. It goes without saying that the Police and other enforcement agencies cannot be expected to be standing in attention at the spots where such incidents could occur. But what enables and encourages the violators are shoddy investigations and absolute lack of enforcement of laws.
It is imperative that these law-breakers are speedily tried in a Court of law for criminal negligence and punished severely to serve as deterrent to others who have no qualms in engaging in illegal and unlawful activities, risking other people’s lives. Tourists are our honoured guests and we must treat them with respect and ensure their safety. It is time the State, and especially the Chief Minister, wakes up to the grim reality and ensures that the authorities and particularly the Police are ever vigilant and anticipate happenings rather than engaging themselves in post-mortems.
