A case of bribery has been reported by an advocate from Kolhapur against Goa Police at the border check-post. According to the advocate, he came to Goa as a tourist in his private car. He was stopped at the border for a licence check, but he did not have his licence with him. He says the police fined him Rs 500 but did not give him any receipt. When he asked for the receipt, it was still not given.
In another incident, a tourist driver from Karnataka was allegedly beaten by police for drunk driving even though he was not drunk. Since he could speak only Kannada, he had difficulty explaining what happened. However, through his words and actions, he managed to say that the police had wrongly detained and assaulted him. The complaint states that police at the border often harass tourist vehicles and collect money as “fines” without giving receipts. It also says some officers hide their identity by not displaying their names on their uniforms.
The advocate from Kolhapur has requested the North Goa SP to take action. Tourists come to Goa for peace and to enjoy its natural beauty, but harassment at the border spoils their experience. There should be CCTV cameras at all check-posts, monitored by senior officers. This will help ensure transparency and show the true picture of what happens at the border. Goa is known as a tourist destination, and if such incidents continue, it could affect both domestic and international tourism, harming the overall tourism sector.
