The Public Works Department (PWD) has recently partially completed the laying of hot mix asphalt on MDR-5 from Maria Goretti Chapel to Holy Cross High School at Gaunsa Vaddo, Siolim. The white plastic fluorescent paint applied along the road edges and on the speed breakers is a welcome step. However, the absence of a painted centre divider line is a serious concern.
The centre divider marking is essential to help motorists maintain their lanes, especially on this stretch where many drivers tend to drive recklessly, as though they own the road. The PWD Engineer in charge should ensure that the divider line is painted immediately to prevent accidents and save lives.
While the cost of this marking may run into a few lakhs, such expenses are insignificant when compared to the frequent damage to PWD roads due to rains, excavation for utility services. Cost should not be a concern when the objective is to save lives.
