Instead of increasing the number of MPs from 543 to 850, why not let one MP represent 40 lakh people instead of current 20 odd lakh? That way, the number of MP's required will be reduced to 350 (for a population of 140 Crore). Our legislative expenses will go down and we will have less candidates for elections, leading to reduced spends and less of tug of wars for government formation. Why increase the burden on the people by increasing these free loaders from 543 to 850.
After all, their salary, pension, travel expenses, constituency spends, telephone bills, office costs, water, electricity, furniture, housing, medical reimbursement etc. come out of the pockets of taxpayers. Each MP costs the citizens of India @ Rs 48 lacs per year (excluding their Rs 5 crore MPLADS fund, a major part of which is embezzled anyway) for near zero performance. And where would this stop? Next time around, we will have to build another Parliament building to house these MPs.
