I write to express my deep concern after witnessing the large number of mature trees felled along the stretch from Margao Western Bypass to Pirni Circle. A road once sheltered by a green canopy now lies exposed with heat radiating from the bare asphalt onto passing vehicles. This raises the question: Who are we catering to with these road-widening projects ” tourists? If so, our authorities need to understand tourism better before designing such projects. The majority of “family-type” tourists come from cities seeking an escape from urban settings. Trees are the primary element that provide that experience. Goan roads have always been cherished for their tree-lined avenues. We must also remember that trees are natural oxygen factories where we trade our COâ‚‚ for their Oâ‚‚. The oxygen produced by saplings cannot match that of fully grown trees for decades. If Goa continues down the path of unchecked urbanization family tourists will be replaced by those seeking only alcohol, parties, casinos, pubs and drugs. I hope our ministers realize that such actions make their intentions very visible. And I hope voters are discerning enough to notice this and vote wisely.
