Justice must match the crime to stop rapes

Kolkata horror: student gang-raped in college - The Goan Everyday - June 28, 2025. This incident of a student gang-raped in a Kolkata college seems like just another incident of rape and will soon be forgotten and everything will seem normal. The guards, of course, must also be held responsible. What we seem to forget is that student, that girl, is somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister. That woman raped on the streets is somebody’s wife, somebody’s mother.

So, where does it all end? Of course, counselling could help in preventing such incidents. But serving a jail term or hanging as punishment for such crimes may seem too lenient. What is needed is punishment equal to the crime committed. Only then will men come to their senses and keep their carnal desires in check.
