In 1947 we threw out our colonial masters, gave ourselves a Constitution with a Parliamentary system. From the partition horrors and chaos our founding fathers laid the foundation on which we democratically progressed. I understood that democracy was of, by and for the people. We built our institutions with stringent checks and balances knowing human nature and we witnessed intelligent, strongly contested and sometimes humorous debates in Parliament, with appointed Election Commissioner TN Seshan ensuring free and fair transparent elections! What have we today? The winter session has started. The majority ruling party and hopelessly divided Opposition hates and insults each other. Government does not like any criticism, stakeholders are not consulted and legislation and Bills bulldozed through. I find the media is a lapdog instead of a watchdog and we have to rely on social media. I find my privacy and freedom in danger under the guise of protecting me and national security. The majority government wants to turn us into a Hindutva Pakistan? Let Parliament clearly go by our Constitution and prove to us and the world that we are a true democracy.
