A bunch of pro-Maharashtrawadi loyalists are again pressurising the government of the day to bring an amendment to the Official Language Act in the upcoming monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, so as to give equal official status for Marathi along with Konkani in Goa. Well, Konkani is not just the mother tongue of Goans but is a language of our unique identity and cultural heritage of Goa. And taking this fact into consideration, Konkani was rightfully bestowed the top position and made the sole official language of the state way back in 1987. The language that is practically still spoken by 90% of our Goan population in the state in their day-to-day affairs is definitely not Marathi but Konkani. Our Konkani language is a unifying force, a strong cement and which still goes to bind all the major communities of the state into one linguistic community. And for this very reason, I feel that Konkani alone must remain as Goa's sole official language and no other language. So, let's come together to save Konkani from these anti-Goans for one last time and really defend our unique identity for our future generations in Goa.
