The first general election was held in India in the year 1951-52. The election was contested by merely 60 parties. The cost was hardly around Rs 10,000 crore which rose to Rs 60,000 crore in 2019 elections. The rise of Congress party was seen in 1990-1995 elections after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in Shriperambudur in Tamil Nadu by human bomb. The elections also saw changes with TN Seshan as chief election commissioner who was tough enough to bring free and fair elections In India. He was pioneer in bringing lot of changes, model code of conduct, etc for elections. For the first time EVM electronic voting machine was used in 2004 elections 20 yrs ago. The rise of Congress party was seen from 1995 to 2009 with BJP in opposition. However the scene changed after 2014 elections when BJP swept the same with majority and became single largest party in India. Today we are in 2024 Lok Sabha elections and with more then 67 crore population in voters list. Goa is also going for elections in May and will see many changes in the candidates and their joining the different parties.
