LS polls: Candidates need to focus on Goa issues

The BJP's decision to nominate Pallavi Dempo, a figure renowned in business and sports but lacking political experience, for the south Goa Lok Sabha seat is alarming. Her detachment from the region's pressing issues and reliance on temple visits for electoral success is concerning.

Despite assurances of guidance from BJP officials, the sidelining of competent local leaders like ZP Sanjana Sanjay Velip raises doubts about the party's support for grassroots representatives. Neglected infrastructure issues, such as corroded benches in Chandor village, highlight the disconnect between elected officials and community needs.

Criticism extends to long-standing MPs like Shripad Naik and Francisco Sardinha, whose tenure has yielded little progress for Goa. Both BJP and Congress appear unable to field fresh, capable candidates, relying on familiar faces instead.

Rather than blame-shifting, Congress should introspect and nominate candidates committed to Goa's welfare.

There are concerns that Pallavi Dempo's candidacy could prioritize business interests over Goa's well-being, potentially facilitating land grabs by the Modi government. It's imperative for parties to prioritise competent, community-focused candidates over political expediency.
