It is shocking to know that the government decided to admit NEET-PG candidates who had scored zero (14 candidates) and even negative marks (13 candidates) in specialty courses such as physiology, anatomy and biochemistry. The absurd logic to take this drastic step is that of the nearly 70,000 post-graduate medical seats, annually 2,000 to 2,500 seats remain vacant as there are no takers even after 2-3 rounds of counselling! If this is the case, then why go through the rigmarole of calling for applications, asking for payments, setting question papers, conducting the exams, correcting the papers and counselling the candidates. And sometimes the exams get cancelled due to leakage of the question papers! The NEET-PG seems to be a neat farce where all the candidates are offered a medical seat, irrespective of their marks. This year of the 2 lakh registered candidates, some were absent. Perhaps from the next exam, even the absentees would be offered a specialty course so that all seats would be filled. God save the medical fraternity and their potential patients.
