It’s deplorable to note that a garage located in a residential building was gutted in a fire last week in the heart of Margao albeit without casualties. Such incidents have become commonplace as the commercial capital lacks proper design-planning and development. The cause of the fire has been attributed to carrying out denting works by the auto mechanics by using oxyacetylene gas which is highly inflammable.
It is high time that the Margao Municipal Corporation (MMC) in tandem with the Fire Brigade and Pollution Control Board officials go on an inspection spree to identify the black spots dotting the city landscape to avoid recurrence of such catastrophic situations in future. The safety and security aspect of operating garages in residential complexes need to be reviewed in the light of the fire incident.
