Milking the GST cattle

It is not surprising that recently curd, paneer, honey and many other pre-packed and labelled food products and even cheque books, solar water heaters, maps, charts and several other items are now under the gargantuan umbrella of the Goods and Service Tax (GST).

We do not know what good this would do to crores of citizens who daily use some or the other items.

The new GST rates may help to plug the holes in the leakage of tax revenue yet, people use jugaad methods to get away from paying the GST.

Instead of announcing at regular intervals what items would be taxed, it would be prudent if the authorities publish the goods and services that are not taxable as this list would be shorter.

There is a limit to milking the GST milch cattle either by introducing new or increasing the existing tax on thousands of items and services.

Let us hope that the zeal with which the GST is being executed does not turn out to be a failure in the long run!
