One has heard of anti-social elements impersonating as policemen and relieving gullible women in the state of their gold ornaments. Now a conman who has been posing as a senior IAS officer since early December was reportedly arrested by the Calangute police on Sunday. It is learnt that the accused person, a resident of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, tried to extort a night club in Tito’s Lane and two shacks at Baga by threatening the owners and prominent clubs to close down or face dire consequences. The conman presented an ID card claiming he was an IAS officer from Odisha and convinced a police constable to accompany him for an “inspection" of the Calangute area. The police have arrested him under various sections of BNS Act 2023 for cheating, impersonating and intimidation. How could an impersonator move about for almost a month without raising suspicion? How can an IAS officer from another state operate in Goa without authority from the Goa government? This was sufficient to raise suspicion about the impersonator. The police need to carry out a thorough investigation of the incident in order to unravel the truth. Are there more impersonators operating in the state?
