Need to issue prompt TDS certificates

The Income Tax Department has been generous enough in extending the last date of filing annual tax returns for Assessment year 2021-22, from July 31 to September 30, because of hardships faced by individual taxpayers.

However, the ones to take advantage of the concession are the nationalised banks which have delayed in furnishing TDS certificates (Form 16A) to their clients, for no rhyme or reason.

This is causing a lot of inconvenience to the regular tax payers as they are unable to file their tax returns without the TDS certificates. Tax consultants also refuse to file returns of their clients without TDS certificates, because there is often a mismatch between the annual income certificates issued by banks and TDS certificates.

A lot of time is also wasted before the TDS certificates are up dated on the 26AS form of the Income tax dept. Until this is done, filing of tax returns in time, continues to be a matter of concern.

Secondly, it is not known why TDS amounts deducted by banks are not quickly deposited with the Income Tax dept, since banks are quick to deduct TDS from their customers accounts and never spare them even if they are bit late in submitting the relevant 15H/15G forms to obtain TDS exemption. I hope the Income Tax looks into the matter and takes corrective measures.
