‘A black day for democracy in the country’ is what the decimated Congress party in Goa has termed the first anniversary of the defection of eight of its elected MLAs to the BJP, on September 14 , 2022.
Apparently, it was the Congress party’s final act of retaliation and vengeance, after it failed miserably to disqualify the eight defecting MLAs. Nothing surprising however, going by what is happening in several states in the country, with large scale defections and splits in political parties. The anti defection law is now both toothless and a joke, and needs to be ether scrapped or revised.
There is also little voters can do, as even their elected representatives of high credibility and probity in public life have succumbed to the greed for power and pelf, by switching parties. Hectic preparations are currently on by the newly formed INDIA opposition bloc to take on the might of the Modi govt at the Centre for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It is going to be a do or die battle, the outcome of which will never be known, till the last vote is counted. Horse trading and resort culture will be rampant, as we continue to watch helplessly. This is the sad state we have landed ourselves in.
