In a tragic incident reported at Karmale, Keri, two minor siblings reportedly drowned in a farm water tank.
It is learnt that the water tank which is around 2.5 meters deep was filled with water to irrigate the areca nut plantation. Such tragedies are indeed avoidable. It is not only children but also adults, who do not know how to swim, who are in danger of drowning in such open tanks.
In the villages large concrete tanks are built in order to store water to irrigate various types of plantations and farms. Incidentally these tanks are at ground level and do not have a covering which can prove dangerous especially during the night.
Such water tanks need to have a metal or a plastic covering so that people are warned of the impending danger.
The village panchayats need to carry out a survey of the water tanks and wells that are at ground level and have them covered in order to avoid any untoward incident.
