The tally of votes for the 50 Zilla Panchayat elections tells the same old tale of disunity among the Opposition parties which was nothing but a story of lack of teamwork and trying to score on their own thus leading to splitting of votes which would have definitely resulted in victory. Though the BJP increased its vote share to 40 per cent from 33 per cent in the Assembly polls in 2022, an united opposition would have crossed the finishing line easily with almost 60 per cent of the vote share. In fact, the BJP would have only won about 13 to 15 seats if opposition were united. Only Salcete provided a cause for celebration to the Cong-GFP combine where the partnership made a clean sweep. Ii is high time that the Opposition realises that only unity and teamwork can redeem their chances if they harbour hopes of a win in the 2027 Assembly elections. To comment on the BJP performance, it seems that the electorate has not given it a thumbs up, but that the Opposition has charted its own thumbs down.
