Pack milk in glass bottles

It is learnt that independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has reportedly dashed off a letter to the Chief Minister demanding a ban on the manufacturing of consumables to drink and eat in plastic bottles, jars and containers.

It is pertinent to note that in the past milk supplied to the consumers in Goa was packed in reusable glass bottles instead of plastic sachets.

Farm fresh milk is the most traditional and popular milk packaged in glass bottles. Glass protects and conserves milk much better allowing consumers to enjoy the milk and other dairy products over a longer period of time.

Due to its inert nature, glass bottles can also be reused over and over again. Unfortunately, the convenience and cost factor also meant that glass milk bottles were soon replaced by plastic sachets.

Major disadvantages of glass are fragility and heavy weight. However the advantages of using glass bottles far outweighs the use of plastic containers.

The Goa government could give a head start to the use of bottles in the state by packing milk from the Goa Dairy in reusable glass bottles instead of plastic sachets.
