The GCCI, and its agriculture committee in particular, need to be congratulated, and fully supported for the very brilliant proposal that government should plant fruit bearing trees and medicinal saplings along the highways, especially all the new highways and roads that are being redeveloped for the last 5 years.
Those of us who are old enough and observant and caring,
will remember that our ancestors usually lined the streets and roads with useful fruit bearing trees, like mango, tamarind jackfruit and others.
Unfortunately in recent years this concept has been replaced by the planting of the rather damaging, if not destructive trees like, eucalyptus and rain-trees, which suck and dry out the groundwater, and perhaps damage the soil.
Therefore the proposal of the Agriculture Committee of the GCCI needs the whole-hearted support of the entire community in Goa, so as to nudge this government into putting this very useful important proposal into implementation with immediate effect.
Perhaps the government can give added flip and strength to this mission by promoting corporates (under CSR), institutions, NGOs and individuals to adopt one or more trees, to ensure the survival of the trees, for which government must give due credit and recognition by putting up the names of the sponsors, on a placard on the trees.
