I have read articles of various writers in different magazines asking political leaders to desist from making hate speeches. Party leaders keep on repeating the same during election campaigns and recently the Supreme Court has asked States to file book cases against such leaders whether any complaint is filed or not to curb such malpractices.
It may be recalled that in 2007 Sonia Gandhi had called Narendra Modi maut ka saudagar (merchant of death) which had backfired the same way the current dispensation BJP leader also called Sonia Italian and that Congress was ruling the country from Rome.
While constructive criticism of the ruling dispensation is the primary duty and objective of the Opposition, adequate care should be taken by elected representatives that decency and political propriety are not transgressed in public space.
In the world's largest democracy, elections need to be fought by highlighting the track record of good governance of the ruling party, and not through narrow, sectarian politics.
